Elijah is 21 years old, and quite knowledgeable about PrEP. In fact, they started talking Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) when they were 15. After some life challenges, they are ready to get back on track with their PrEP medications, now that they have insurance that will cover it.

Interviewer:  Good afternoon, Elijah! Thanks so much for coming in for this interview today! Let’s jump right into the questions, shall we?

What do you know about PrEP?

Elijah: I know that it goes by different names, but I know it prevents you from contracting HIV. I know it does a good job at preventing the spread. If you stop taking it, your body may not respond to it in the way it did before.

Interviewer: That’s great! Are you interested in taking PrEP?

Elijah: So I have taken it several times in the past, but my former insurance no longer covered it. I now have different insurance that can cover it, so I am looking online for some options. Have you heard of MistR?

Interviewer: Yeah I have

Elijah: I see those commercials all the time, with some of the Drag Race stars. I am very interested in getting back on PrEP, it’s been like 2 months though, since I’ve taken it

Interviewer: How long were you taking PrEP before? How often were you taking your meds? Did you miss doses, or did you take them every day?

Elijah: It’s been about 4 years now. I first got them prescribed to me through an adolescent health center when I was 15. I was sexually active, and they thought it’d be best to introduce this additional option for me to stay safe, you know? I take them separate from the other medications I take, like after my hair, skin and nail pills, or when I had my teeth done, I was taking amoxycillin. I was thinking it was the PrEP that was making me drowsy, but it was probably the amoxycillin.  But again, I had to stop because the insurance I previously had didn’t cover it.

Interviewer: Ah I see. So you are clearly not only familiar with PrEP, but you are also ready to get back on track with your PrEP medication. Let’s set up a time to meet and look at some locations to get your PrEP medications started again, cool?

Elijah: That would be great, thanks!

Interviewer: Thanks, Elijah! I’ll contact you to discuss next steps!
