Cory is about to turn 21 and is looking forward to his very eventful birthday party at a hotel. He is ready for a lot of fun, but trusting the other party goers to bring/use condoms may not be protection enough. Our PHRESH Interviewer will make him more aware of what else to do while taking PrEP, and the reason why it is important to still use condoms when taking Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

Interviewer: Good morning, can you please state your name, age and pronouns?

Cory: Good morning, my name is Cory and I’m 20 and my pronouns are he/him. I’m also about to be 21 and I am so excited! I’m about to have soooo much fun!

Interviewer: Oh, that’s great! Happy early birthday! So, what kinds of plans do you have?

Cory: I’m doing some drinking-legally finally- and I am going to be having some other fun with some guys I met on this app.  I’ll be getting a room and…let’s just say I am not leaving it until check out time. Trying to see how many men I can collect lol.

Interviewer: Oh ok, so you’re trying to have A LOT of fun, huh? A time is about to be had!

Cory: Oh you already know! I have some fantasies I have always wanted to explore, and I think my birthday weekend is the perfect time.  I’m about to let these guys I met do whatever (*giggles*)

Interviewer: Oh ok, so you going to make sure you’re safe, right?

Cory: What you mean? I carry weapons, and I made sure I vetted them enough. I know they won’t try to hurt or rob me, and I’ll make sure that I have friends close by with my hotel key in case something goes wrong.

Interviewer: Ok and that’s a smart move, you going to make sure you have condoms too, right?

Cory: I mean, I told them to bring them, and I don’t have anything, so what’s the issue? I’m on PrEP so I figuredwell, you know.

Interviewer: This is why I do these interviews! It is important that we understand that PrEP is most effective when used while also still using condoms! While yes, PrEP does help prevent HIV infection, it doesn’t protect you or reduce the transmission of other STIs, like syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. Being infected with those STIS can and will still increase your chances of contracting HIV.

Cory: OMG are you serious? You mean all this time I have still been at risk? What am I going to do?

Interviewer: Well Cory, don’t panic. It just means you need to get screened to make sure everything is good on your end, in reference to these other STIs, you know? And to always remember to use condoms even when you’re on PrEP. Cool?

Cory: Yes, absolutely! Can you help me set up an appointment to get screened? I wanna get this out of the way asap.

Interviewer: Absolutely, I can help you get started on that right away. This concludes our interview, Cory. Thank you so much for coming in and agreeing to do this interview and thank you for allowing me to assist you to set up a screening appointment.

Cory: Thank you!
